Zimbabwe Netball Preps Not Enough: Mutsauki

Zimbabwe 21-and-Under netball coach Ropafadzo Mutsauki is not impressed with the quality of preparations her side is getting ahead of the July World Championships qualifiers scheduled for Botswana.

Zimbabwe Netball Association president, Leticia Chipandu said after their initial three-week camp in April, some of the players are attached to clubs while others are playing within the schools competition since they are in school.

“We cannot say the preparations are enough because ours is a team sport and you would want to have the team together for long periods to work on combinations,” said Mutsauki.

Four countries will represent Africa in the world championships. And Botswana, who are also going to host the global showpiece next year have already qualified by the virtue of being the hosts.

Other countries that also have the potential to qualify from the Southern African Region include South Africa, who are ranked fifth on the world rankings as well as sixth placed Malawi.

However, they are likely to face stiff competition from Uganda, who are also regarded as a powerhouse in Africa.

However, Mutsauki believes the fact that players are getting game time means they will be fit enough going into camp and are not expecting much difference in terms of competition at the qualifiers.

“But this is helping because going into camp you know the fitness level are ok.

“As a coach you have to be flexible with what you have, so we will utilise the time that we have and be able to do the work. As a player and coach you are always preparing so we are not expecting much difference when we play at the qualifiers because we play in tournaments and the league. And not all team will be strong.”

The youth team is expected to resume camp early next month in preparation for the qualifiers.

“The team is resuming camp on the 1st of July and they leave on the 20th because the games start on July 23. So we will have two days of rest and acclimatising,” said Chipandu.
