Zim Finish Third In Region 5 Gymnastics

Hosts Zimbabwe again finished third at the Region 5 Gymnastics Championships at the Belvedere Teachers College in Harare. Three teams took part, with South Africa dominating ahead of Namibia as usual in the annual competition.

Zimbabwe did pick up some medals, with 10-year old Becky Conlon winning four individual bronze medals and a team bronze in the junior artistic event.

While Zimbabwe continue to be outshone by South Africa and Namibia in the competition, there was an accolade for the nation as Chris Muchatuta was elected president of Region 5 Gymnastics.

The outgoing president Alan Chadwick had praise for Zimbabwe Gymnastics for the level of organisation in a very well-run competition.

“We've been very impressed with hospitality and the effort made by the hosts,” said Chadwick. “It's been a self-funded affair, so they've put on a fabulous effort.”

Zimbabwe will be participating in gymnastics at the ongoing Region 5 Youth Games in Angola, where tumbling is the sole gymnastics discipline being staged.
