Ronaldo Scores On Return As Real Madrid Rack Up 15th Consecutive La Liga Win
There were five different scorers including the returning Cristiano Ronaldo as Real Madrid ran out 5-2 winners over Osasuna in La Liga on Saturday.
On Ronaldo’s first start of the season following an injury at the end of his Euro 2016-winning exploits in July, the Portuguese opened the scoring after just six minutes from Gareth Bale’s assist.
Danilo, Sergio Ramos, Pepe and Luka Modric all added goals before 62 minutes were played to wrap the game up.
Oriol Riera and David Garcia pulled goals back for the visitors to add some respectability to the scoreline, even though Roberto Torres missed a 73rd-minute penalty.
Madrid were off to a flying start on a blistering hot afternoon when Ronaldo converted in the sixth minute from just two yards out, Gareth Bale putting it on a plate for the Portugal captain after having beaten the offside trap.
More chances followed as Bale shot just wide before goalkeeper Nauzet Perez saved Sergio Ramos' header.
The visitors began to grow in confidence as the game moved into the final 10 minutes of the first half and were unlucky not to score when Unai Garcia struck the crossbar.
Just moments later though and Madrid doubled their advantage, on 40 minutes, when they raced up field and worked the ball to Danilo, whose low drive was allowed to squirm past Perez.
Ramos ensured a comfortable half time score when he headed in just before the break, following a corner from Toni Kroos, the goal-scorer afforded far too much time in the box.
To their credit, Osasuna began the second stanza with purpose, but they were to suffer another blow when Pepe made it 4-0 just 10 minutes after the restart, the centre-back also heading in from a Kroos corner.
Bale then missed a good chance to score, but there was to be no denying Luka Modric, who picked out the bottom corner from 18-yards out after being played in by Álvaro Morata in the 62nd minute.
Osasuna were to pull a goal back soon after when Miguel De Las Cuevas flighted a superb ball to the back post, where Oriol Riera did well to locate the bottom-corner with his header.
The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 73rd minute after a foul by Ramos, but Roberto Torres' effort was poor and Kiko Casilla was able to make the save.
But they did have their second goal, in the 79th minute, when Jose Garcia thumped a header into the top corner following Jaime Romero's cross.
Osasuna played the final 10 minutes with only 10 men after defender Tano Bonnin picked up two yellow cards in quick succession.
Apart from a Kroos miss, there were no other chances in the closing minutes as Zinedine Zidane's side strolled to the finish line for an ultimately comfortable win despite a spirited showing from the visiting side in the second half.
