Prisons Commissioner’s Sports Week Kicks Off
The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Commissioner General’s national Sports gala kicked off at Ntabazinduna training school on Monday and will run up to Friday.
The games which are meant to unearth talent within the service are making a return after being last held in 2012.
Commissioner Wonder Masimba Chisora said the Sports week will be used to select athletes who will represent the force at regional and international events.
“We have returned with a bigger and better package this time around because we want to encourage sports participation within the service. The last time we had these games we had six disciplines but now we have 10,” said Commissioner Chisora.
“We want to maintain a healthy service through sport and that’s why we have increased the sporting codes on offer. We use such tournaments to select athletes who will represent us at SADC and continental sporting events thus our theme is correct, empower and develop through sport,” he added.
The teams are divided into five regions namely Matabeleland, Mashonaland, Manicaland, Mid- Masvingo and the National Headquarters. Mashonaland won the last edition of the games in 2012.
The officers are participating in soccer, netball, athletics, tug of war, darts, pool, tennis, golf, chess and volleyball.
