FLOYD MAYWEATHER has confirmed that a super fight with Conor McGregor is very much on the agenda.

The British Sun recently broke the news that the pair will meet as early as this summer but that story was met with skepticism by many. However, since then both McGregor and Mayweather have fuelled the speculation with the Notorious taking to social media to post a picture of himself and the American with the words “MMA v Boxing”.

But revelations by Mayweather are the clearest indication yet that there are talks going on to finalise the contest - billed as the billion dollar fight.

“It’s really not a rumour. The fight may happen. We really don’t know as of right now, but do I think the fight will happen? Absolutely,” said Mayweather, who is widely regarded as the best fighter in the world and a five-division world champion.

“It has to be a boxing match because most fights that Conor McGregor won inside the Octagon, he was a stand-up guy.

“I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be a tough fight for me . . . we don’t really know as of right now, but there’s been a lot of talk, and hopefully we can make the fight happen,” added Mayweather, speaking on Showtime.

“He is no pushover. One thing about Conor McGregor, he is no pushover. He fell short in his last bout but a true champion can always bounce back so that’s a guy that I can’t overlook.

“We haven’t picked a venue, we haven’t talked about money yet. I am going to get US$100 million. Every time I go out that’s my number. Every time I go out and get inside that squared circle, it’s US$100 million or better.” Mayweather’s record is 49-0 and there is an argument that the American is just feeding the hype machine in the build up to a potential 50th bout while, in the McGregor corner, talk of a money spinning fight with Mayweather might strengthen his hand in his current dispute with the UFC. 

While McGregor does come from a boxing background, he has never been near the professional ranks so a potential fight with Mayweather seems highly unlikely as a sporting contest. But bearing in mind that the great Muhammad Ali took to the ring to take on Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki, anything is possible once the dollars are involved. – Irish Independent
