Mash Eagles Seek Historic Treble
Mashonaland Eagles are on the brink of making history in the Zimbabwe Cricket domestic scene as they only need to bag one more trophy to complete a hattrick of titles for the 2015-16 season.
No other team, since the inception of the franchise system in 2009, has managed to win all the three domestic competitions, Logan Cup, Pro50 Championship and T20 Cup, in the same season.
But the Eagles have asserted themselves as the giants of local cricket with two trophies, Pro50 Championship and T20 Cup, already in their cabinet this season.
“Those results are through hard work from both the players and coaches,” Eagles assistant coach Leonard “Tichman” Nhamburo said.
“We just agreed during the pre-season with the players about what we want to achieve this season and we did exactly that so we had something to work towards to.”
Eagles now have their claws sharpened for the prestigious Logan Cup in which they are at an encouraging position only needing to win their last game against rivals and pacesetters Manicaland Mountaineers at Harare Sports Club this week.
Mountaineers, on 21 points, lead Eagles by two points while third-placed and defending champions Matabeleland Tuskers, on 17 points, are also in the mix but might lose their crown unless bad weather ruins the Eagles-Mountaineers clash while they win theirs.
Nhamburo added: “This last game we are also going on a positive. We just said ‘if we have a chance of clinching the third one let’s take it’ so we are looking forward to winning and the players have committed themselves towards that and also making history.”
Tuskers, who host Mid West Rhinos at Bulawayo Athletic Club, have the most Logan Cup titles having won four times whilst Eagles and Mountaineers have claimed it once each.
