Manyuchi's Boxing Kit Confiscated
CHARLES MANYUCHI’S boxing kit and other equipment intended for use during the Zimbabwean champion’s fight against Jose Agustin Feria of Colombia next week was confiscated by ZIMRA officials at the Harare International Airport on Thursday night.
Manyuchi’s manager Chris Malunga touched down from South Africa after 9PM with the boxer’s gear, as well as other equipment to be used during the October 14 fight, but could not proceed with the equipment which was confiscated upon arrival.
Malunga confirmed the incident but said he was leaving everything in the hands of the Ministry of Sport and Recreation, which is also heavily involved in organizing the historic fight night set for Harare International Conference Centre.
“Yes we have some boxing equipment that is being held up at the Airport, they (ZIMRA officials) asked for duty but I thought this was sports equipment meant for a national sporting event.
“I have notified the Ministry of Sports and I am confident the matter will be resolved,” said Malunga Friday morning.
This is not the first time Manyuchi’s name has been involved with ZIMRA officials as last year in July a trophy he was given in Italy, after successfully defending the World Boxing Council International welterweight belt, was also confiscated.
Manyuchi had stopped Gianlucca Freeza of Italy in the sixth round and was honored with the trophy.
The 26-year-old boxer had to surrender his passport to get his trophy back and eventually, ZIMRA officials released the superstar’s travel document in September 2015.
Efforts to get an immediate comment from ZIMRA spokesperson Canisio Mudzimu were fruitless as his mobile number was not answered.
