Gayle Blasts Century To Down England
West Indies batsman Chris Gayle became the first batsman to score two centuries at the World T20 and lead his side to a six wicket win.
With an unbeaten 100 off 48 with 11 sixes and five fours, Gayle tapped a low full toss to backward point off Stokes to take a single that gave him the 100 and a win for his side.
“I’ve been practising with Stuart Williams, a lot of throw-downs and I executed out there. Marlon’s innings eased the pressure. It was a fantastic innings and I’m glad I finished it. I was pumped. Sulieman Benn, my drinking partner, said to me before I went out, ‘Entertain me, Chris.’ That motivated me. I’m looking forward to my home town, Bangalore! The celebration is about ‘Champions’ by DJ Bravo. We’re going to build victory,” said Gayle.
England captain Joe Root thought they were in control until they could not contain Gayle.
“I thought we were slightly above par but we have to think about ways of combatting the dew. When you get someone as dangerous as Chris Gayle … we lost the lateral movement. He played extremely well, hit it a long way. Fair play to him. We did a lot of things well,” said Root.
After winning the toss and putting England to bat, who set 183 runs competitive target on a pretty good batting track. Gayle’s unbeaten ton guided West Indies to rather easy win.
Alex Hale and Jason Roy had given England a decent start of 37 runs for the first which, Joe Root and Jos Buttler upped the tempo for England in the middle overs with quick-fire 48 and 30 respectively guiding England to an impressive 182 which was pretty defend-able on this pitch was sure to give some assistant to seamers under lights.
But Chris Gayle had other ideas as he put England bowlers to sword and mainly negotiated with Six and fours. He scored his second Twenty20 international century of just 40 balls which included massive 11 sixes and 5 fours. Marlon Samuels also played his part with 37 of 27 balls but it was Gayle who single handedly won the game for West Indies. – wires
