Flax Disappoints As Windigo Rules
WINDIGO from the Kirk Swanson stable won the Zimbabwe Challenge at Borrowdale racecourse last Sunday.
Windigo had come on as a dark horse and had Randall Simons on the irons, to snatch victory from Newton Power in the last stride of the 1450m Zimbabwe Challenge – winning by a margin of 0.05 lengths.
By Windrush (USA), Windigo is owned by Colin Bird and his previous four wins have been over more ground but the five-year-old gelding produced a storming finish, after being rested for 155 days.
He was bred by The Alchemy and for their efforts the pair walked home $4 800 rich in an event that had $8 000 in stakes.
On second place was Newton Power of the Gorkhan Terzi stable who together with jockey Nic Sibanda pocketed $1 600.
La Carmelita partnering Morgan Nyamagwete finished third and were $1 000 rich after the race while pre-tournament favourite Flax did not disappoint as he come on forth.
Flax from Bridget Stidolph stable was tipped to take the honours but had a tough time on the course while stable mate Mathematician was fifth.
Phantom Major and Sherman Brown won the 1450m Novice Plate for owner John Koumides and the Swanson yard.
By Sarge, Phantom Major has now won both his starts and he was bred by Mr D.G.M.
Southey, who also bred the Stidolph winner Super Good.
The next Borrowdale Park race meeting is on Sunday, January 8, and features the Hachiman Sprint.
