Dube Impress On Cosafa Debut

HE was just a month old when the Warriors played their debut Cosafa Castle Cup match in which they lost 1-2 away to Namibia but 20 years later a shy looking Prince Dube makes his own debut in the tournament and opens his account with a goal.

What also made the Highlanders frontman’s debut even more telling was the Jersey number which he spotted, 12.

It is a number that made Zimbabwe's opponents shiver all the time they faced the Warriors as it was won by the legendary Peter Ndlovu.

There were fears that the Jersey number might be too heavy for Dube but judging by his performance against Seychelles at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace here in South Africa, it actually spurred the former Somvubu High School pupil.

"I felt comfortable with the number, there was no pressure at all despite it having been worn by such a legendary player," said Dube after the match on Friday.

He said the goal has given him confidence in national team colours and was also confident that more will come.

"I knew in my heart that given a chance and support, I will be able to score and I did. I am sure more will come now as long I am selected," he said before getting into the team bus in the company of his Highlanders teammate Honest Moyo and former strike partner Knox Mutizwa.

Coach Sunday Chidzambwa was also impressed with the performance of the young man as well as Moyo, Innocent Mucheneka of Chicken Inn.

"Those we threw in against Seychelles who had not played in the first two games played very well, I will mention Prince, Honest and Mucheneka, they made the life of those who later came in very easy," said Chidzambwa.

Dube though was later taken out for Mutizwa late in the game on precautionary reason after picking a slight knock with assistant coach Lloyd Mutasa saying they wanted to protect the young man.

"The young man picked a knock and we didn't want to expose him to further harm hence our decision to pull him out" said Mutasa, an indication that the technical team might still throw the youngster into the fray depending as the tournament progresses.
