Danhiko Paralympic Games Kick Off
Two foreign teams are part of this year’s Danhiko Annual Paralympics games which kicked off at Danhiko School in Harare on Friday.
Danhiko Annual Paralympics Games chairman of the organising committee Godfrey Majonga said this year’s event which is the 28th edition of the games is of much interest to athletes since it comes just after the Rio Paralympics earlier this month.
“This year’s event is a special one because it comes just a few weeks after the Rio Paralympics when athletes will be motivated to emulate their heroes. There is a lot of enthusiasm among the athletes because national selectors have taken advantage of the games to select national team players,” said Majonga.
“We have 120 teams coming from all over the country as well as two foreign teams, one from Zambia and the other from Botswana. The theme for this year is that disability is neither a condition nor an identity. This is not an event about disabled people running around but stiff competition about what they can do with their disabilities.”
The government through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation has pledged $30 000 for this year’s edition of the after a recent tour of the Danhiko Center by Sports Minister Makhosini Hlongwane.
The Danhiko Paralympics which will be officially opened on Saturday by the First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe have produced a number of athletes over the years, most of whom have gone on to represent the country at international level.
The athels will take part in wheelchair basketball, athletics, soccer, bocce among other sports.
