Coventry's New Era

SEASONED administrator Admire Masenda was on Sunday re-elected the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee president at an elective general assembly that also saw Olympian Kirsty Coventry being voted vice-president.
The elections were held at Prince Edward School.
Masenda got 31 votes to beat his challengers Joe Rugwete and Charles Mukaronda.
Rugwete, who is the former Zimbabwe Karate Union president got nine votes and former Young Warriors manager, Mukaronda had two votes.
Swimming icon Kirsty Coventry amassed 38 votes to become one of the two vice-presidents.
The seven-time Olympic medallist described her election as an honour and is looking forward to her new role at ZOC.
“It’s a huge honour and I had the opportunity in the weeks leading up to talk to a few of the national federations. And getting the majority of their vote today just gives me the confidence that they have confidence in myself and what I have to add and the value that I can bring to ZOC.
“So huge honour and I am very excited and now the work begins,” said Coventry.
She joins Thabani Gonye, who retained his post after securing 27 votes to beat Frederick Ndlovu, who got 19 votes.
Northern Region Division One soccer league vice-chairperson, Martin Kweza withdrew his candidature for the vice president’s post just before the elections. However, he contested for the board member post and lost.
Cleopas Nyangoni was re-elected treasurer, securing 33 votes against Godfrey Sunguro’s 9.
With Coventry being elected one of the two vice-presidents, Leticia Chipandu was declared board member women as she was the only remaining candidate for the post.
The other ZOC board members are Addison Chiware with 19 votes, Rick Fulton had 30 votes, Custom Kachambwa and Frederick Ndlovu secured 31 votes and Stephen Mudawarima got 29 votes.
The board is expected to have at least three women but at the close of nomination only two – Coventry and Chipandu had been received.
And the board recommended and resolved that one slot be reserved and be contested at the 2018 general assembly.
The elections were presided over by life honorary member Robert Mutsauki and acting director-general, Joseph Muchechetere.
A total of 42 representatives voted including 29 associations voted.
