Copa Focus on U-15
AS the 2017 edition of the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Copa Coca-Cola draws near, organisers say they have shifted focus to the U-15 age group.
The tourney is expected to be launched at Rujeko High School on May 24.
According to the sponsors, the U-15 who will be selected into the Zimbabwean Copa Dreamteam, will play 5-A-sides with their international counterparts.
Speaking at a media workshop organised by the sponsors, Coca-Cola market activations manager, Vee Chibanda said they want to actively involve the younger generation.
“As a brand we want to see products from the tournament going far with the game. This year our Dreamteam select will go play 5-A-side on the international platform and maintain the 11-A-side locally.
“Their involvement is a drive to meet international standards and a promotion of active lifestyle among them as they exchange skills with players from other countries,” she said.
She added that they have plans to change how girls football is being viewed.
“We have seen that we are not doing enough for the girls and this year we might try to improve their skills by giving them many preferences.”
Nash has pledged their support through strict vetting processes for participating schools.
“The association will be paying close attention during the vetting process and we are saying no to age cheating.
“We are putting heavy requirements for every player creating no room for such practices,” said Albert Mucheka, Nash head in charge of football.
The 2017 National Finals will be hosted at Bindura’s Chipindura High School on July 21 and 22.
Stars that have so far come through the Copa Coca-Cola tournament include Peter Ndlovu, Samson Choruwa, Johannes Ngodzo, Tatenda Mukuruva and Tatenda Tumba among others.
