Bulawayo Hosts Zimbabwe High Goal Polo Crosse Tourney
The Polo Crosse Association of Zimbabwe will this weekend hosts the Zimbabwe High Goal tournament at Bulawayo Polo Crosse Club aimed at scouting talent for future national teams.
Polo Crosse Association of Zimbabwe president Allan Molloy said the tournament which will be divided into divisions will give the players an opportunity to play the sport at a high level.
“There are going to be three divisions, which is division, A, B and C. Each division is made up of four teams. Then there are the little kids we call the Pee Wees. These kids are also going to play to show spectators that Polo Crosse is truly a family sport from Pee Wees to Veterans, Men and Ladies,” said Molloy.
“The object of the High Goal tournament is to give all age groups an opportunity to play at a High Level. With this in mind a Handicap limit is put on Teams to encourage Managers to select Teams having an even spread of players that must all be a 4 Goal Handicap and above.
“The Handicap Limit for the A Division Teams is a Team Total of 40 Goals. Bearing in mind that unlike Golf, Handicaps per player go higher as you get better and they range from a -2 Goals for the beginners to the highest being 10 Goal Handicap for the very Top.”
The High Goal tournament comes as a precursor to the national championships which will be held at Antelope Park in Gweru later this month.
Polo Crosse is a combination of polo and lacrosse. It is a team game played on horseback, where each player has a stick made up of a shaft like a polo stick with a square or round head with a loose net in it.
The players pick up, carry and pass the ball from player to player, with the aim of scoring goals. The team that scores the most goals in a match is the winner.
