All Set For Boxing Extravaganza

ZIMBABWEAN boxing star Charles Manyuchi weighed in 200g under the welterweight limit when he and Colombian challenger Julio Agustin Feria stepped onto the scale on Thursday morning ahead of Friday’s non title fight at the Harare International Conference Centre.

The World Boxing Council Silver welterweight champion, Manyuchi, weighed 66.4 and was 500g heavier than Feria.

Manyuchi will fight Feria in the main bout of a fight night that has seven matches on the undercard while Lolita Muzeya of Zambia and Agnes Mtimaukanena of Malawi will square off for the WBC International welterweight title.

Both Muzeya and Mtimaukanena were within the welterweight limit of 66.6 as the WBC tournament fever reached a crescendo.

News cafe at Five Avenue Centre in Harare was a hive of activity as a total 16 boxers weighed in but there was a bit of drama as Zambian boxer Donald Kampamba was 2kgs over the light heavyweight limit of 79.3.

Kampamba, who is set box Zimbabwean champion Wesley McDade in a non title bout, was given two hours to shed the 2kgs failure of which an agreement between the two fighters’ stables would be sought for the fight to take place.

According to event organiser Chris Malunga of Oriental Boxing Promotions, the handlers of Manyuchi, the fight night will start around 6PM Friday with Manyuchi’s bout expected around midnight.

Manyuchi has been promised a car by his local sponsors Mr T35 regardless of the outcome while ZIFA President Philip Chiyangwa, a former boxing promoter of repute, has pledged "something special" for the Zimbabwean champion.

Fans will pay $50 to seat by the ring side, $15 for Section B and $5 for the rest of the arena.
