
Acting President Endorses Historic Fight
ACTING PRESIDENT Phelekezela Mphoko has endorsed Friday night’s World Boxing Council approved non title fight between welterweight silver champion Charles Manyuchi and visiting Jose Agustin Feria of Colombia.
Although the fight has been reduced to a no title contest, the 10-round duel remains the main attraction of an evening that has seven bouts on the undercard.
Acting President Mphoko, who will be the Guest of Honour at the Harare International Conference Centre on Friday, endorsed the fight on Tuesday morning at his Munhumutapa Offices in Harare.
“We have a number sports, cricket, tennis, horse racing, rugby then athletics, quite a number of them and now boxing.
“This Friday there is going to be a non title fight between our visitor from Colombia and Manyuchi our own son at the Harare International Conference Centre.
“Now let us support boxing because it is a very good sport,” said the Acting President.
“This is a very important tournament, we have people from Colombia, Malawi and Zambia coming to fight here in Zimbabwe, let us promote them.
“Then Manyuchi and your opponent, you will not end at this level, you will go higher and higher. Boxing is a very good sport; I know boxing is also part of tourism that is why the Deputy Minister of that Ministry is here.
“All I can say is let the best man win,” said the Acting President.
Oriental Boxing Promotions of Zambia, the handlers of Manyuchi are the promoters of the fight night and the manager Chris Malunga urged Zimbabweans to come in their thousands “to witness a historic event.”
“This is for Zimbabwe, this fight is for the fans. We have said we will continue supporting Zimbabwean boxing because Zimbabwe and Zambia are one.
“We are only separated by a river. Boxing lovers will have a night to remember on Friday,” said Malunga.
