4x4 Jamboree Goes Platinum

Donnybrook Raceway was once again buzzing with activity on Sunday at the 19th edition of the 4x4 Jamboree which is an ultimate test for drivers’ skills and vehicle engineering.

The event went platinum and with an audience of just over 3 000 car enthusiasts and supporters from the community.

The show began as promised at around 10 in the morning and from then on it was one flawless performance after another.

The Jamboree event on the motorsports calendar has the largest annual gathering of the 4x4 enthusiasts and it surely live up to its billing.

Nikki Foote the event organizer said she was excited that this year’s edition has seen more corporates getting involved in the long wheel base courses.

“Our jamboree has been going strong for 22 years now and this is most definitely due to the support that we get from our sponsors and it is absolutely fantastic to see you all here again,” she said.

I am excited this year to see some of the corporates getting involved in our long wheel base courses. This I would consider is an excellent way of showing off your vehicles to the public rather than just having a static stand

The jamboree also would not be possible without the help of the jamboree committee. It's my first year as jamboree chairman and I would not have been able to get through this all without the help of the committee,” Nikki said.

The annual event was identified with spectacular, dangerous and suicidal vehicle maneuvers and the drivers put up an exciting action-packed weekend.

The course consisted of a number of trial sections and obstacle courses driven under different classes and prizes were awarded to the best and fastest balance on the bumpy course circuit.

Rodney Beckley in his Suzuki Samurai, Mac Bailey in a Toyota pick-up, Tim Thorburn in his jeep wrangler, Adrian Watt in his renault cournil special, farmer Mass Kirk also in a cournil, Gareth Geech range rover v8, 3.5 lt, Jim Perry lanrover swb, Breanda Hakeins in her modified willies jeep, Clive Russel in a Toyota landcruiser, and Greg Stead in his modified naartjie were among those who battled it out at the event.

It was surely a day of fun as the drivers take turns to drive and climb on hilly roads with their speeding and circling cars in a sport that has brought classic entertainment to various joints in the capital over the past years.

The action ended with a mud run where the 4x4s raced through the muddy raceway splashing water to the cheering spectators.

They surely turned their swag on as the crowd kept on clamouring for more action and drills to satisfy their appetite.
