Zimbabwe Cricket In Fresh Crisis

Zimbabwe Cricket players who are owed unpaid match fees dating back to July 2015 have gone on industrial action refusing to train ahead of a series against Pakistan A which starts at the end of September. The players have maintained on a conference first with Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Wilfred Mukondiwa to discuss their deteriorating working conditions.

Sources who spoke to ESPNcricinfo said the situation is dire as ZC has failed to even bring players from outside Harare to join camp because of lack of funds.

"We are just fed up at the moment. It is crisis after crisis over here," a player said while detailing the cloud of uncertainty hanging over them.

ZC has also not renewed any contracts for the players since the end of July when they expired both for national and domestic levels.

Most of the players who are on the national contract were given a month’s extention on their deals to cover the New Zealand series that was played between July and August.

Zimbabwe Cricket spokesperson Darlington Majonga said their organisation was seized with the matter and are working on improving the situation.

“ZC has been paying the match fees in tranches and will settle the outstanding amounts soon.

“What is important is that their contracts are ready following an all-inclusive negotiation process that involved representatives of the players” confirmed Majonga.

Zimbabwe Cricket board was due to hold its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday and insiders confirmed Mukondiwa said he will then meet with the players on Thursday after the board meeting.

Meanwhile, there has been no announcement on Zimbabwe's schedule for the rest of the international season. They are scheduled to play two Tests against Sri Lanka, but there was initially speculation of that series being altered into a triangular fifty-over competition also involving West Indies. More recently, there has been word that both the Tests and the tri-series will take place.
