Zim Top Golfers In All Africa Challenge Debut

TOP junior golfers Danille Bekker and Emily Jones will make their All-Africa Challenge Trophy debut when the event tees off at the Citrus Golf Course, Hammamet, in Tunisia this morning.

The duo will have veteran coach Cathy Riley and captain Batsirai Tilowakuti in their corner.

Bekker (13) is quickly establishing herself as one for the future after winning some big local tournaments while Jones (12) has worked hard to make the team.

“We worked very hard and we were in camp for close to two months now and everyone is now ready to face Africa’s best,” said Riley.

“Golf has changed over the years as we can see from South Africa and Kenya who uses young talent and continue to groom it and the nation is doing well.

“I have confidence in the players and I know we will do well at the tournament.”

Sixteen nations, including hosts Kenya, Botswana, Cameroon, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, turned out at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi for the 2014 championship. With the exception of 2006, South Africa has claimed victory in every other edition of the championship.

Meanwhile, the first black Falcon Golf Club chairman Maxwell Chirisa will be remembered for his works and his life this Saturday.

Chirisa, who passed away on December 11 last year, will have his memorial held at his family home in Hatfield.

Eddie Murungweni, the Falcon chairman, said they lost a great man and he will always be remembered for being there for Falcon.

“We had a loyal cadre and to us Falcon members he is a hero. He did a lot for the club and we are even considering to organise a tournament in his honour in future,” said Murungweni.

The memorial service will be held this Saturday at No. 5 Medehempstede Road, Hatfield, from 10am.
