Yet Another Cricket Fanfare
If you enjoyed the St John’s Ram Slam T20 tournament last month then brace yourselves for yet another Rolf Valley cricket fanfare.
The exquisite Borrowdale school is holding a sequel to the glamorous tournament exactly a month later. It is the St John’s Invitational Junior T20 tournament with the six top cricket playing schools booked to grace the momentous occasion.
The usual suspects St George’s, Prince Edward, Peterhouse, Falcon, Churchill as well as the hosts have lined up to do battle at St John’s in a competition that will feature a total of 18 teams contesting at Under-16, Under-15 and Under-14 levels.
David Mutendera, the St John’s teacher in charge of cricket, confirmed to Suburban the imminence of the tournament saying frenetic preparations were already underway.
“The St John’s Invitational Junior T20 tournament will be held from 21st to 23rd October this month. We are already occupied with the preparations ahead of it. It is only for boys aged between 13 and 15,’’ said Mutendera.
The junior cricket extravaganza follows hard on the heels of the successful Ram Slam T20 that the school hosted from 23-25 September and attracted eight teams, two of them from across the Limpopo River.
It remains to be seen whether St George’s, winners of the Ram Slam, will make it double by clinching a second major competition on St John’s soil.
Not much has been gauged of the strengths in junior teams with the main focus hovering around the senior team fixtures which, apart from the Ram Slam T20, have been highlighted by the Watershed 20-20 and St George’s Smashing T20 tournaments during the current third school term.
But Prince Edward, who won a pre-season 20-team tournament they organized in August and christened it the National Under-16 Cricket Festival, could emerge as the team to beat.
