Williams Reveals Secret Behind Chevrons' Stunning Comeback

Man of the match Sean Williams said it was belief that made Zimbabwe stage a stunning comeback in the third ODI against Afghanistan on Tuesday.

The match had a heart-stopping finish that, many who witnessed the action at Harare Sports Club, would have been forgiven for doubting a Zimbabwe win was possible.

Afghanistan needed 16 runs with five wickets in hand in their chase of Zimbabwe’s paltry 129 but the tourists wobbled and lost by three runs.

Thanks to a never –say-die attitude exhibited by Zimbabwe’s bowlers especially Williams who earned the man-of the-match award for his figures of 3/15, the Chevrons snatched victory.

“(A win) still seemed possible (at 121/ 5)…121 for five and you add two wickets to that, two wickets in two balls anything can happen and that’s exactly what happened,” said Williams.

“We kept on fighting I think it was all to play for at that stage,” he said.

The left arm spinner, who was making a return to the national side after passing his fitness test, said he was confident he would dismiss the number 10 batsman Amir Hamza.

“It’s obviously all in your mind; I knew I was going to get him out before I even bowled.

“(In the) previous over before that I nearly hit him on the pad three times in a row and each one of them would have been out.

“I could see that I was on top of him and he was feeling the pressure so I knew if I bowl in the right area I was going to be on top of him,” said Williams who got Hamza edging to point where Ngarava took an easy catch to win a difficult clash and spark wild cheers from his team mates and the home supporters.

“I actually walked over to Cremer and said look one wicket two wickets here …if we get (Mohammed) Nabi it was done.

“We knew the style of the Afghans the way they play it’s T20 sort of style.

“I knew with so many runs to get that’s how they were going to approach it anything could have happened but we lucky it went away, “said Williams.

He also lauded the bowling unit for an impressive effort with seamers Christopher Mpofu, Ngarava and Tendai Chatara sharing seven Afghanistan wickets.

“Considering how poor our performance the batting was today (yesterday) and how our bowlers came out and fought I think quite a bit of pride it shows, this fighting and unity in the team.

“It’s a big step going forward.

“Also it’s a young bunch of guys they are getting tested of what’s required when times are tough,” said Williams.

Zimbabwe now trail the five match series 1-2 and will look to restore parity in the fourth ODI on Friday.
