Thompson Hails Nasho Kamungeremu Memorial Championship
ZIMBABWE professional golfers Association (ZPGA) president and former television personality Garry Thompson has hailed the ongoing Nasho kamungeremu memorial championship which is hosted by Chapman golf club.
The tournament is in honour of the late kotwa born former ZPGA president Kamungeremu who passed away in 2007 and speaking at the tournament Thompson said they are honpouring one of the best talent to come from Zimbabwe.
“As ZPGA we remember one of the best great golfers of course he was under the shadow of the late Lewis Chitengwa, we are happy to be honouring him.
“We have Steve Ferreira who is playing some of the best golf and he is also our order of merit leader and today he is on the leaderboard which has good scores.
“We had good players in Marc Cayeux, Nicky Price, Mark Mcnulty among others but Kamungeremu would have been in that level as well,” said Thompson.
Thompson took time to elaborate on an incident when they had an opportunity to represent the country as amateurs in the Eisenhower Trophy now the World Amateurs Championships when they played against legendary golfer Tiger Woods.
“He was a great man and I remember sometime at the Eisenhower when after a round of golf when he said hey Garry the Lion has eaten the Tiger that was after Kamungeremu had shot a 71 and Woods was a stroke behind.”
Kamungeremu passed away in 2007 after he began his golfing career at school in 1984, and in 1988 he was the first black to win the Zimbabwe Junior stroke play.
The professional who was based at Chapman managed to take his talent to countries like South Africa, Botswana, The United States and Canada among others.
In 2004 Kamungeremu was suspended from the sport for assaulting another player, but was later pardoned.
He served two terms as the ZPGA president from 2005 before he was re-elected in 2007.
Kamungeremu died of a heart attack at the age of 34 on August 3, 2007, at Avenues Clinic, several hours after presiding over a tournament.
