Proteas Greats Bring Excitement For Chevrons

Interim Chevrons coach Makhaya Ntini, in his usual loud and high-spirits, stands on the embankment adjacent to the Harare Sports Club nets as his boys go through their paces during a net session.

Standing dangerously behind the spinners’ net is a broad-chested man wearing shades, clad in black shorts and Zimbabwe Cricket team warm up kits.

His face is almost covered in beard and with arms folded he says something to PJ Moor who is facing the spin bowlers.

Legendary Lance Klusener is in his first Zimbabwe Cricket team session. He is the new batting coach for the Chevrons.

He is observing the on-goings while his compatriot is still at his usual, loud and high spirited.

“Come on, enjoy, come on boys let’s do this!” shouts Ntini.

Klusener then moves to the side of the nets where he is engaged in a long chat with Sikandar Raza who is padded up ready to go into the net for his stint.

Klusener writes something in his notebook.

“Change nets!” Ntini again.

A new set of batters that includes Sean Williams, Chamu Chibhabha and Raza walks into to bat, while Hamilton Masakadza, Vusi Sibanda and PJ Moor exit the nets.

The environment is relaxed and Klusener is still observing from the nets.

After an hour and half of intensity work out, Ntini calls time.

And he calls his bowlers while directing batsman to Klusener.

Mr. Klusener and his batters sit on the adjacent unprepared pitch and he starts talking.

Everyone is listening attentively.

Suddenly there is a burst of laughter as the batters start leaving as the meeting with the batting coach ends.

Hamilton Masakadza and Richmond Mutumbami remain padded up to face three net-bowlers who have agreed to give them extra work.

In the middle net is Chamu Chibhabha getting some throw- downs while in the far left net is Klusener with a side arm throwing balls to Sibanda.

Almost everyone has left but Klusener and Sibanda are still in the net.

Sibanda is done, but Klusener apparently is still at work as Raza steps in the net for his extra.

The time is 1315 Zimbabwe cricket team manager Lovemore Banda has informed me that Klusener is not yet talking to the media.
