Mountaineers Targets Pro50 Championship Title
MOUNTAINEERS captain Tino Mawoyo believes the Mutare cricket franchise has what it takes to lift the 50 overs competition after collecting the Logan Cup title.
Manicaland Mountaineers recently bagged Logan Cup championship title for the 2016/17 season after forcing a draw with Harare Metropolitan province’s Eagles, a result which was enough to ensure they finish the season at the top of the table.
The result gave Mountaineers a total of 31 points and Eagles 20, an unbeatable lead for the new champions.
“We lost the first two games of the 50 over competition, but our performance over the last couple of months has shown we have what it takes to win consistently at this level.
“The batsmen have started to contribute and that has helped us win the matches. We have Kevin Kasuza who has been outstanding with the bat and has shown signs of maturing in his role as a top order batsman. I am looking forward to more influential innings from him in these upcoming games,” said Mawoyo.
He said there is, however, need to put more hard work into the game.
“We have the pedigree to go all the way and win the 50 overs competition but we really have work extra hard. We have to win the remaining four fixtures to have that chance but I believe in my boys and as much of an uphill task as it is, we have e capacity to do so,” he said.
Logan Cup champions, Mountaineers coach, Shepherd Makunura, recently praised his players for their consistency throughout the Logan Cup competition and also singled out talented batsman, Kasuza for an outstanding display in the country’s high profile cricket tournament.
“We were consistent throughout the season, players showed a lot of character and we believed in ourselves. That was the main reason for our success.
“I think individually, Kevin Kasuza has been consistent with the bat, but above all we have shown a lot of character even when the odds were against us. We believed and we were a team,” said Makunura
