India Complete Series Whitewash Over Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe suffered a disappointing – but expected – 3-0 One Day International series whitewash at the hands of India, who did so with a 10 wicket victory with 169 balls to spare at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.

The opening partnership of debutante Faiz Fazal, who got a half century after scoring an unbeaten 55 off 61 with seven fours and a six, and Lokesh Rahul (63 off 70 with four fours and two sixes) did all the damage for India.

Winning the toss, Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer chose to bat first, a decision that has not worked in their favour in the last two ODI games and likewise, backfired as they were all out for 123 after 42.2 overs.

By lunch, India were 23-0 after seven overs.

“I thought batting first was a good decision for us because there was no grass and it looked it would be very difficult to bat on in the afternoon,” said Cremer.

As if it was a carbon copy of the second ODI on Monday, Zimbabwe once again crumbled after hitting the 100-runmark as they were 104-3 but were all out for 123 – at one point losing four wickets in four consecutive deliveries.

Jasprit Bumrah got off to a rather slow start bout got his first wicket with the penultimate delivery of the 33rd after he claimed the wicket of Timycen Maruma (17) and went on to be the hero of the Indian attack to finish with figures of 4-22 in his 10 overs.

The fall of Maruma left Zimbabwe on 104-4 and marked an unprecedented period for the Zimbabweans as Chigumbura was next on the line with the next delivery – walking back to the pavilion with yet another golden duck – after he was caught behind by Ms Dhoni off Bumrah.

Patel took to the attack in the 34th over and with his first delivery and Waller was the casualty after he was run-out following poor communication and his departure meant Zimbabwe were 104-6 before he was responsible for Greame Cremer with the next delivery and the hosts were stuck on 104-7.

Chigumbura – under pressure to resign – yesterday at the post match conference told the media he is not going anywhere and still has a “number of years to play”.

Former Chevrons captain, Elton Chigumbura is not thinking of quitting the game yet, saying he still has few more years to go in his career as a player.

“That is just rumours and it is their (fans) own opinion. I still have a few more years to play. It is just that I was out (of form) in the last two games. It is part of cricket sometimes you are out, sometimes you are in,” said Chigumbura.

The two sided now shift attention to the T20 games, the first set for Saturday afternoon at the same venue.
