WOMEN’S domestic cricket is expected to come alive this weekend as Zimbabwe Cricket will run a series of monthly T20 tournaments in an effort to keep the ladies active and competitive.

The women’s first T20 tournament will run from April 8-10 at the Country Club with three teams, yet to be unveiled, participating.

ZC Head Cricket Affairs, Givemore Makoni, believes that having a tournament for the ladies will help them earn as much game time as possible in the lead up to their various regional and international engagements.

“It’s an ongoing thing and I think it will be sufficient because any game time is valuable to these women.”

After poor displays in previous international tournaments, most recently the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers last February, questions were raised on the development and future of local cricket for women.

It appears ZC have woken up from the deep slumber and are now stepping up to fill the void that will try to at least make the ladies competitive on the international stage.

It is hope that these monthly T20 tournaments will generate the much needed game time and interest that will eventually see the resurrection of a proper women’s league in the near future.

There hasn’t been a proper domestic league for women in Zimbabwe since 2011-12 season and this has been area of concern.

Makoni added: “The problem is that a lot of the girls are school going so they will be at school for most of the time.

“For provinces to make teams they rely on these school girls and some adults. It is during holidays that the girls from school and adults get to be together and play.”
