Micho Linked With Bafana Job
KickOff.com can confirm that Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has been in contact with SAFA about the possibility of replacing Shakes Mashaba as head coach.
Suspended Mashaba has not yet been sacked following misdemeanours over the weekend and will first go through the process of a disciplinary hearing with SAFA before any official announcement is made.
KickOff.com has now ascertained that Uganda national team coach Sredojevic has already been in contact with SAFA and agreed in principle to take over, but only after leading the Cranes at the 2017 African Nations Cup in Gabon in January next year.
When contacted for comment, the former Orlando Pirates coach was surprised to hear of our awareness of the Bafana Bafana talks and remained ambiguous.
“There is nothing impossible as coaches are always on the move if the best chances come,” the Serbian said, while also stressing his commitment to Uganda until after the Nations Cup.
As coach of Uganda since 2011, Sredojevic has guided them to qualification for the 2011 and 2016 African Nations Championships (CHAN), won the 2015 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup and qualified for the 2017 Nations Cup.
The 47-year-old, who started his coaching journey in Africa with SC Villa in Uganda before handling the Buccaneers, later coached St. George in Ethiopia and Al Hilal of Sudan before switching to handle the Rwanda national team and later Uganda.
Meanwhile, Mashaba is expected to be let go after “a regrettable incident” after Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Senegal as the coach took exception to congratulations from SAFA president Danny Jordaan and Dennis Mumble.
The 66-year-old believes the association has been looking for ways to relieve him of his duties despite his decent record on paper.
