Gray Blames Self, Uncertain On Future
SCOTT Gray doesn’t think he will continue as the Old Mutual Zimbabwe Under-18 coach following the team’s three defeats at the Coca Cola Under-18 Craven and Academy Weeks at St. Stithians College.
Old Mutual Zimbabwe Under-18 return home this Sunday empty handed after losing 72-17 to Leopards, 34-14 to Eastern Province Country Districts and 45-21 to Namibia on Saturday.
“I am very disappointed in myself. Please make sure you get that right; I am not disappointed in the players at all,” Gray said.
“I am disappointed with myself. I have failed quite badly in trying to get these boys to play as a team. I have made a lot of mistakes. I will watch all the games and see what I tried to do...”
He added: “At the end of the day the reason the three losses are the way they are is because of my failure to; one to get the boys to play as a team and two to defend and three just our attack we weren’t just clinical enough in our attack and I need to work out why.”
This was the fourth time, since 2004, that Zimbabwe have ended the Craven Week without winning any game with the other times being in 2005 in Bloemfontein, 2014 in Middleburg and 2015 in Stellenbosch.
While taking all the blame for the 2017 defeats, Gray is now uncertain if he will be given another run in the upcoming Craven Week tournaments.
“I don’t think I will be asked to come back again so I don’t think we need to worry about that. If they were stupid enough to ask to do it again then I would look at it and I would try and see how I could have done it better.
“But now I am happy with the way everything worked out. There is no one to blame but myself…I let the team down I think,” he said.
Gray was appointed as Zimbabwe Under-18 coach in April to work with Cleopas Makotose as his assistant and Shaun De Souza as the manager.
Against Namibia on Saturday, Zimbabwe got their tries from captain Jack Charsley, Mazvitaishe Nyamarebvu and Ronald Murimi while Dillon Brain converted all.
Meanwhile, the Old Mutual Zimbabwe Under-18 Academy side also lost 27-24 to Namibia in the Academy Week. Zimbabwe Academy had a memorable debut beating Border Country Districts 64-15 and losing the other game 62-14.
