Zvishavane Derby, A Rivalry Cast In Mine Shafts
A draw between Shabanie Mine and FC Platinum was the fairest result between the two teams but their display once again put to fore the argument that the Zvishavane is arguably the most intense and exciting derby in the country at the moment.
Off the radar for three years following the relegation of Shabanie Mine in 2014 the rivalry between the two sides didn't subside as the atmosphere at Maglas on Sunday was electric with the stadium filled to capacity.
It is a rivalry with a difference from many derbies as this one has its own culture and beliefs associated with mining towns, giving it more intensity and passion more than any other duel in the country.
The fans warmed it up well before the match with taunts flying from one set of supporters to the other with the financially stable FC Platinum fans teasing the ever financially struggling Shabanie Mine that they are so poor such that even beggars don't stray into Shabanie Mine territory while Shabanie fans had placards written "Norman Mapenalties " insinuating that FC Platinum get favours from match officials.
Shabanie Mine fans followed with a dig after the match saying despite camping in South Africa before the start of the season, FC Platinum could not beat Shabanie Mine, a team whose most players stayed at a clinic turned into residence for the players.
The match itself charmed even the neutrals as it started on a searing pace with FC Platinum settling first and surging ahead as early as the third minute when enterprising Talent Chawapihwa stabbed home a cross from Hillary Bakacheza on the right.
Shabanie Mine refused to be cowed into submission as they drew level twelve minutes later Wellington Taderera finishing off a nice move from the back.
The remainder of the match remained a tale of action swinging from one end to the other with no club willing to concede even an inch for the bragging rights of the town.
In the nine times the two clubs have met since the promotion of FC Platinum in 2011, the Platinum Miners have one the duel five times, draw four times while Shabanie have won once.
The gulf in terms of talent between the two clubs has always been glaring with FC Platinum attracting the best players in the country every season while Shabanie Mine have been a club of either upcoming players looking for a platform to make a breakthrough or its those players who are looking for a retirement home.
But despite these disparities, the Zvishavane derby has always been tightly contested.
