
Zimbabwean Players Miss Out At Absa Awards
There was no Zimbabwean on the podium during the 2016/2017 AbsaPremier Soccer League’s Awards ceremony held in Sandton on Monday night.
Khama Billiat won the 2015/2016 Player of the Year award but this time around no Zimbabwean won the various awards that were available.
Cape Town City’s Lebogang Manyama was the big winner.
The Citizens skipper - also this season's KICK OFF Footballer of the Year - claimed the prestigious PSL Player of the Season award, having captained his side to third place in the league, as well as achieving Telkom Knockout glory just 144 days into the club’s existence.
Manyama walked away with a total of R425 000 on the night, having claimed the league’s topscorer prize for his 13 goals, as well as the Players’ Player of the Season gong.
Teammate Aubrey Ngoma was also recognised for his efforts across the season as he was named Telkom Knockout Player of the Season as well as the PSL Midfielder of the Season.
League winners Bidvest Wits enjoyed widespread recognition as well, with Darren Keet claiming the Goalkeeper of the Season award, Thulani Hlatshwayo winning the Defender of the Season award, Phakamani Mahlambi claiming the PSL Young Player of the Season award while Gavin Hunt was named the 2016/17 Coach of the Season.
Other big winners on the night included Wits’ Daine Klate who was named MTN8 Player of the Tournament while Orlando Pirates’ Abbubaker Mobara claimed the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament prize.
