Zimbabwe International Footballer Flees DR Congo

ZIMBABWE international player Oscar Machapa has fled political disturbances in the DR Congo and will miss his club AS Vita’s CAF Champions League match against Saint George in Ethiopia on Saturday.

Machapa arrived at the Harare International Airport Tuesday afternoon and told SportsZone he would monitor the situation in DR Congo from his home.

A conflict between the DRC’s armed forced and a militia calling itself Kamuina Nsapu has sent over 20,000 refugees across the border into Angola.

“I am back home because it’s not safe in the DR Congo right now,” Machapa told SportsZone at Harare’s International Airport.

AS Vita are owned by an army general called Gabriel Amisi Kumba and the team has been training under heavy guard from the army.

AS Vita play away to Ethiopian side Saint George on Saturday in a CAF Champions League match.

“I am not available for that one, I am back home whilst monitoring the situation back in DRC,” Machapa said.
