Zimbabwe Hosts Women's Africa Cup

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union will next month host the Africa Cup Women’s Sevens Rugby Championship tournament.

This will be a major milestone for Zimbabwe’s women’s rugby with eight teams set to attend the games.

Some of the African countries expected to attend the tournament to be held on the 17th and 18th of September at the Police Grounds include Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Senegal, South Africa, Madagascar and Namibia.

ZRU director of rugby, Brighton Chivandire, said the hosting of the tournament symbolises the growth and stature of the women’s game in the country.

The Zimbabwe women’s rugby team, the Lady Cheetahs, this year participated at the Rio Olympic Sevens Repechage World Rugby tournament in Dublin, Ireland.

The Zimbabwe women’s rugby side is busy with final preparations and are expected to be boosted by the addition of girls from the Zimbabwe Schools Under-18 team which recently took part in the SA Rugby Youth Week in Kimberley (South Africa).

The Under-18 side has been one of the best performing junior rugby teams at the annual provincial festival over the years under the guidance of ousted women’s coach Nsikelelo “Sykes” Sibanda.
