Zim v Malawi: what they said after the match!
CALISTO PASUWA
Local coaches have come of age now. Qualification to Afcon was first made by Chidzambwa, followed by Mhlauri and now myself. Local coaches need to be empowered by undergoing clinics as you understand that soccer is now getting more scientific. We also need to have more time in camp with the boys. We are happy that we are one of the Southern African countries to have qualified for Gabon Afcon 2017.
COSTA NHAMOINESU
I am indeed very happy with the victory today, that is what we have been working for and I want to pay tribute to my fellow team mates for having achieved this result. Our focus now is for the next assignment against Guinea which I believe we are going to come up with a positive result. So far so good. It’s good for us to be going to Gabon come 2017. Afcon is Africa’s biggest tournament and it’s a good feeling to be there as a player. We are going to give our all come Gabon 2017. The technical team told us to let Malawi play in their own half and catch them on the counter. The most important thing is to play with a clean sheet. We have quality players in front and if we keep a clean sheet at the back, we know for sure that something is going to happen in front. I am feeling fantastic right now. Looking forward to maintain our form and raise the Zim flag high at Gabon Afcon, come 2017.
WICKNELL CHIVAYO
Zimbabwe has greatly improved. Obviously where there is financial support, the players feel motivated. Zimbabwe is going to go far come Gabon 2017.
KUDA MAHACHI
I am feeling very happy for my country and I dedicate this win to my late daughter. We have a good generation of players and we need to push each other. As a team we didn’t play well but we are happy we won.
CUTHBERT MALAJILA
I am very happy that I came from the bench and managed to score in this encounter and that alone is a strong motivation for me in particular and the whole team at large. Our focus now has shifted to the next assignment against Guinea. I hope with this current squad, we are destined for greater heights if the team is kept intact.
Malawian coach Ernest Mtawali
The result is not a true reflection of the game. We made one or two mistakes and they punished us. In the second half, I think we played well. We created one or two chances and we didn't make use of them. Zim had tactical discipline and has good players who play in high leagues in Europe. We didn’t make use of chances we created. Very sorry to the Malawians. We are out of the AFCON but it’s not the end of the world. I was impressed by the Zimbabwean team. Malawi has to start building for the 2019 Afcon and we have a very competitive team for Cosafa Namibia tournament next week.
GERALD PHIRI (Malawi)
It was a good game from Zim, we didn’t come up for the show. Zim deserved it more than us and will go far at the Afcon tournament. We gave Zim a good run for their money. Zim scored from our mistakes we made. Malawi has got a bright future and quality and we lacked the killer punch. Zim has pulled their socks and its high time Malawi does the same. It’s now back to the drawing board for Malawi.
