Zim Under-13 Beat Border CD At Craven Week

CAPE TOWN - The Zimbabwe Under-13 schools rugby side recovered from an opening day loss to register a 12-6 win over Border Country Districts on Day Two of the Craven Week Festival on Tuesday morning.

Following a 25-3 loss at the hands of Griquas on Monday here at Paarl Gymnasium school Zimbabwe were determined to do well and join the rest of their counterparts who won their games yesterday in various South African Youth Weeks.

Zimbabwe came from behind after Border CD had taken a 3-0 in the 19th minute through Nceba Nyabaza first half after capitalising on an infringement by the tourists in their own 22.

The hosts having realised they could not easily breach the Zimbabwe defence that was well martialled by fullback Simbarashe Kanyangarara, Border CD opted for posts and they made full use of the place-kick.

However, just six minutes from there Hunter Chiutsi was to touch down and Tawanda Matipano made full use of the last minute bonus points kick giving Zimbabwe a 7-3 lead going into the half.

In the second half, Border were an equally strong side but Zimbabwe held on to survive a couple of scares and just in the same manner they had started the first period, Border CD were awarded another penalty Nyabaza adding another three pointer to make it 7-6.

But Zimbabwe held on and in the dying moments of the game they got another try through winger Tadiwanashe Kavhura and though Matipano’s conversion was not successful gave Zimbabwe a deserved win.

Zimbabwe made several changes to the side that lost to Griquas on Monday and that turned out to be a blessing for Gordon Pangeti and his boys.

Fifteen minutes into the game, Border CD made wholesale changes introducing six pairs of legs while Zimbabwe’s only change was in the sixth minute, forced after front-rower Orlando Venn was injured and replaced by prop Daniel Mazorodze.

Giles Munyamana and Tadiwanashe Mupani were the only unchanged as they retained their positions at outside centre and flank while there were five positional shifts to the other five players who were part of the squad against Griquas.

Tavonga Tawonezvi was moved to eighth-man from loose-head prop, Alex Nyamunda was moved from four to five, Nkosana Sikala who featured at number eight in the opening game was moved to flank with winger Chiutsi being moved from 11 to 14 while Matipano was shifted from fullback to second centre.

Hooker Orlando Venn, tight-head prop David Yosa, lock Hopemore Manyoporo, scrummy Brandon Marume, fly-half Tapiwanashe Hungwe, right wing Kavhura and fullback Kanyangarara were introduced.

Out were Paterson, Mazorodze, Tanaka Ndoro, Panashe Zuze, Alex Whitefield, Rly Nakura Munotoda Marimirofa and Takudzwa Zvomuya.
