ZIFA, PSL In Crunch Meeting

ZIFA and the Premier Soccer League will meet Wednesday evening (today) to finalize the issue of relegation and promotion amid a strong indication that the parties will settle for two teams down and four up.

The meeting will take place at the new Zifa offices along Enterprise Road and president Philip Chiyangwa, who will also attend, has confirmed the gathering.

Chiyangwa spoke on the sidelines of a press conference to celebrate one year in office.

He was elected Zifa president on December 5, 2015.

The Zifa, PSL impasse has caught the attention of Delta Beverages whose sponsorship contract with the top flight league has expired.

The top flight sponsors gave a strong warning last Friday that they might not renew their marriage with the PSL if the football politics that have resulted in a spate of suspensions persist.

The PSL want two teams demoted and the same to be promoted as per an agreement reached late last year.

Zifa on the other hand and their regional chairmen in particular, want all the four winners from the regions to automatically qualify for the top flight.

“We will meet today here at my offices after 5PM and finalize the issue of how many teams will be demoted from the PSL and how many will be promoted from the four Regional leagues.

“It looks like the win-win situation is the one where two teams are demoted and four are promoted. It caters for all the parties,” said Chiyangwa.

In that case Shabanie (Central), Yadah Stars (Eastern), Bantu Rovers (Southern) and Black Rhinos (Northern) will all play in the 2017 Premier Soccer League.

Border Strikers and Tsholotsho FC will be relegated from the PSL.

Chiyangwa also hinted that a First Division National League is on the cards to prevent future disagreements relegation and promotion.
