ZDF Select Lifts Defence Forces Trophy

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Select team lifted the 2016 Defence Forces Trophy after beating CAPS United 2-0 at the National Sports Stadium on Tuesday. The ZDF Select team comprising of players from Chapungu and Black Rhinos surged ahead in the 15h minute through Vincent Mhandu before veteran Philip Marufu killed the game as a contest with a beautiful chip over an outdrawn Jorum Muchambo in the second half strike.

CAPS United missing eight regulars, offered little resistance to the ZDF team but added a spectacular to the contest when big goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda played as an infield player. Sibanda came in the last ten minutes for Zvikomborero Bizeki and whipped in a pin point cross which was fluffed by Joel Ngodzo in the dying stages of the match.

ZDF Select team coach Maronga ‘The Bomber’ Nyangela was elated with the victory.

“We had a special formation for Caps United because I have seen them play for some time. They like using the 3-5-2 formation and we used the 4-4-2 formation. I told my players to go out there and enjoy themselves without worrying about the formation used by Caps United,” said Nyangela.

Caps United assistant coach Fungai Tostao Kwashu was pleased with the team’s performance despite the defeat saying the match also afforded them a chance to give game time to some players.

“It was good exhibition game. We rested about eight players of our starters because we are looking at the bigger picture. We want to create competition in the team.  We have 12 more games to play for in the league which is four months. We also want to thank the fans and the big guys who came up with the incentives to make the day more colourful,” said Kwashi.

Caps United did not field a number of regular starters such as Rolad Pfumbidzai, Hardlife Zvirekwi and Dennis Dauda.

For their efforts the ZDF Select team got $8000 while CAPS got $5000
