Women's 7s Fare Well In Dublin Warm-up Games
The Zimbabwe women’s Sevens rugby side were in mixed fortunes in their first set of warm-up games against Trinidad and Tibago on Wendesday afternoon drawing one and winning the other.
This gave the Abigail Kawonza caoched side confidence and ahead of their Olympic qualifier play-off in Ireland.
"The first game we drew 5-5 and won the sesond 10-5 both agains Tiridad and Tobago. This was meant to see how our players would fare against the opposition here. We compare favourably . . . some good came out of the games so we stay positive," said team manager Susan Kamukai.
The games are set for University College Dublin and coach Abigail Kawonza feels her side is ready for the big challenge.
“Rearing to go, had a blow out session at 11 in the night when we arrived on Tuesday.
“We had a gym session in the morning and we will have two scrimmaging games one against Trinidad and Tobago and the other against Portugal.
“We will have more sessions on Friday and Thursday. We are resting on Friday. I hope the girls are serious now that we are here. It has taken us a long time to be here and we are fit,” said Kawonza.
Zimbabwe are in Pool A of the competition where they were drawn against Russia, Samoa and fellow Africans Madagascar. Their first game is on Saturday against Samoa before taking on Russia while the game against Madagascar will complete their group games.
