When Billiat Cried For His Boots

Mamelodi Sundowns star forward Khama Billiat “caused a scene in town” at the age of seven. Here's what happened...

Billiat grew up in the high density suburb of Mufakose, where his parents have told the Saturday Herald that it was football from the off for the Zimbabwe international.

His mother Rosa Billiat said; “Khama grew up loving football. I would follow him playing soccer to order him to come and have his porridge even before he was school going age.”

Billiat’s father Mustafa for his part vividly recalls the incident which made him vow never to take his son to town again.

“He cried for soccer boots, he just would pester you when he wanted something to do with football and as a loving parent I just bought the boots. I remember it was a pair of yellow Adidas boots.

“I told him that this was the last time I would go with him to town,” Billiat senior told the paper.

Billiat started his education at Marimba Primary School before transferring to Gwinyiro where he broke into the first team while only in Grade three, his mother said.

When he got to Grade Five, the Aces Youth Academy, fronted by Mark Duvillard, came calling and the rest, as they say is history.

Billiat’s father remains one of his biggest fans, recording most Mamelodi Sundowns matches and often travelling to South Africa to cheer his son.

“He is a football fanatic,” Rosa said of her husband.

She added; “When Khama comes home his father shows him some of the mistakes he would have made and over the phone they also discuss.”- Goal.com
