We Love Khama But Onyango Was Better

THE majority of Zimbabweans must have gone to bed feeling robbed Thursday night after Dennis Onyango was voted as the African Player of the Year - Based in Africa ahead of our own Khama Billiat.

The Confederation of African Football was once accused of having something against Zimbabwe and the organization’s president had steroids of vitriol poured his way by irate Zimbabweans.

Billiat was visibly upset after coming second and millions of his countrymen who followed events from Abuja on television shared his pain.

The Herald’s senior sports editor Robson Sharuko fired on Twitter.

“I would like to thank CAF for slapping the lion in the face to Zimbabwe’s advantage. Khama Billiat will be out on fire in Gabon to prove to CAF, Africa and the world in general that he is the best thing at the moment,” said Mistry Chipere on Facebook.

As a patriot I would have loved Billiat to bag the big one.

However, the football man in me agrees with CAF that Onyango was the best African based player for the period under review.

With both Billiat and Onyango key members of a Mamelodi Sundowns outfit that won the Caf Champions League this battle boiled down to the international stage.

Both Zimbabwe and Uganda qualified for Afcon, us for the third time and Uganda for the first time since 1978.

For their efforts Uganda were voted as the national team of the year.

I hope you are still with me!

Now who was the best player in the national team of the year?

It was Dennis Onyango.

The best national team provided the best player based on the continent.

It’s difficult to swallow but CAF – for all the ludicrous calls they have made in the past – got this one right.
