We Let Ourselves Down: Ndiraya
Ngezi Platinum coach Tonderai Ndiraya believes they have themselves to blame for their first round exit from the CAF Confederation Cup at the hands of Clube Recreativo di Libolo of Angola on Saturday.
Ngezi Platinum created an avalanche of clear cut chances particularly in the second half but failed to put them away.
“We have ourselves to blame because in football if you can’t score, you can’t win. We had opportunities in the first half but it is in the second half in which we should have won the match because we missed a lot of chances," said Ndiraya.
Kenneth Bulaji was the first to start the series of misses early in the first half when he failed to connect a cross from Godknows Murwira on the right, missing the ball completely with the keeper to beat.
M'Clive Phiri who came in for Bulaji in the second half had the miss of the afternoon when he shot wide with an empty net in front of him.
Donald Teguru dribbled past a number of defenders on the right forcing the goalkeeper to commit himself and come off his line and the striker squeezed the ball past the keeper to Phiri who shot wide under challenge from a defender.
Terence Dzvukamanja was to follow up with another astonishing miss four minutes later when his shot went wide from a close range after breaking through the defence.
Phiri was to return with another miss moments later when he headed agonisingly over the bar from a free header inside the box.
Liberty Chakoroma thought he had given his side a winner 20 minutes from time but his effort was ruled out for an offside.
Despite the exit from the Confederation Cup, Ndiraya was however pleased by his team's participation in the tournament describing it as a learning experience.
“Of course I am not celebrating our exit but I am saying nobody gave us a chance to be where we are at the moment. We would have loved to go far in this tournament but that was not to be. I am pleased with the way we played and now we need to focus on the forthcoming season. I would like to thank the club's management for supporting us and affording us this chance to play in Africa.”
