We Are In Great Space: Billiat

Mamelodi Sundowns kingpin Khama Billiat has revealed that they are in a ‘great space’ ahead of the much anticipated CAF Champions League final against Zamalek.

Sundowns possess a postive mindset despite the misery of a cup final defeat in their last game.

The first leg of the most important club football fixture on the continent will be played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday with the return leg set for Sunday, October 23 at the Borg Al Arab Stadium.

Sundowns head into the continent’s premier club competition final after being whipped by Bidvest Wits in an MTN8 final in which they just froze.

“We are in a great space,” Billiat promptly responds when asked by KickOff.com about what kind of space they are in ahead of the biggest club football fixture that they will play in their careers.

“Now our minds are clear and we know what we are focusing on one cup that we are going for all systems out. We are ready and it is good that we watch our games and we want to learn more and make sure that we rectify our mistakes [from the last game]. We want to go all the way and make sure that we deliver at the end of the day and not just be part of the final.

“We want to make sure that we have something that we can show that we were in the final. It will need us to focus and make sure we do the basics rights. When there are two legs to be played you definitely have to make sure that you score and not concede. Those are the basics that win you things. We need to score as many goals as we can especially at home and make sure you don’t concede,” says Billiat.

And just how does it feel that they are now at the stage that they have always wanted to get to – being in the Champions League and faced with possibility of then going to the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in December?

“It is a great feeling but one that requires you to concentrate more and not be there. I mean when you get here [to the final] you have to open your eyes and see that bigger picture which is the trophy that you are playing for. The trophy is there and we have to understand that this is the only chance that we have.

Looking at that trophy makes you focus more and make sure you do things right.

"We have been working for this. This has always been our dream since we started and to be here is not a surprise because we have always wanted to be where we are right now. Now it requires a lot of concentration and doing the basics right because any mistakes that we make we will regret and regretting is the last thing that we would want.

“That we are playing a team that we have already beaten twice this year has got the good and bad side. The bad side is that they know us because of what we did before to them which requires us to come up with something better and stronger that can give us a better result again. The good side is that we know them as well so it is easy to work around things that you know. It is easy to always come up with a plan and hopefully the plan that we come up with is going to work at the end of the day,” he adds.
