Liverpool were able to exert a modicum of early pressure on Manchester United, but in truth it was a cagey opening to the match, with neither side willing to take any risks or give anything away.

Paul Pogba came within a whisker of opening the scoring for the Red Devils around the 20 minute mark after being played in by a beautiful threaded pass from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but the France international pushed his strike inches wide.

Pogba was at the centre of the action once again when Liverpool were gifted a glorious chance to open the scoring in the 27rd minute after the midfielder was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. Milner stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to put the visitors ahead.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been a constant goal threat all season for United and he almost pulled his side level with a powerful free kick six minutes later, but he was denied by a stunning save from Simon Mignolet.

The Belgium international goalkeeper was at his acrobatic best once again shortly before half time to save a keep out a stunning shot from Mkhitaryan and preserve Liverpool's lead.

After half time Divock Origi used his skill to move past a couple of defenders and make space for a shot, but it was deflected out for a corner.

The visitors continued to push for a second goal and Roberto Firmino test David de Gea with a powerful shot around the hour mark, but the Spanish keeper was up to the challenge.

It remained a tight and enthralling encounter throughout and Manchester United began to come out of their shell with 10 minutes to go as they went in search of a late equaliser.

Marouane Fellaini somehow managed to head wide from just six yards out in the 83rd minute, but his miss did not prove to be too costly as, moments later, Antonio Valencia lofted an accurate cross into the box for Ibrahimovic and the Swedish striker buried his header to earn United a late point.
