Unheralded Zim Player For Turkish Trials
BULAWAYO City striker Clive Rupiya has made just three substitute appearances in his debut season but he has already been lined up for trials at an unnamed Turkish side.
The 18-year-old was at Cape Town City for four weeks on attachment towards the end of last season as he prepared for life in the Premiership.
He was also at Bidvest Wits in February before the start of this season.
Rupiya, who was part of the Zimbabwe COSAFA under 20 squad last year, can play from wide, behind main striker or as the target man.
“I believe I still have a long way to go and even if this materialises, it will still be a learning curve,” he said.
But I have targeted to go far and I thank my coach Mandla Mpofu who was also the under 20s coach.
He really understands me and it was easier to settle at Bulawayo City for that reason.
“I have a lot to learn in the Premiership as this is my first season playing top flight. Before that, I was at Sprouting. I can see there is a big difference in terms of the level of play now. But my attachment at Cape Town and Wits really helped me a lot.”
The striker is son to Godfrey Rupiya, formerly with Lancashire Steel and Mwana Africa.
Rupiya played in Division Two from 2014 to last year as part of his development.
He was top scorer with 28 goals in 2015 and then managed 20 goals in 2016.
The Bulawayo City striker is fast and strong on both legs, making him one for the future.
His manager Calvin Nyazema said they have been careful about the development of the player.
“He certainly has a bright future and I think he has been progressing well. Yes, we are working on something in terms of a trial stint and we can only reveal the name of the club when everything is in order,” he said.
Rupiya is unlikely to feature for Bulawayo City against Black Rhinos at Barbourfields on Saturday as he has not been training with the team trying to make arrangements for the expected trip.
“It will be a big opportunity for him if this works out. But like I said, we can’t reveal much at the moment,” said Nyazema.
