Under-17 In Grant Khomo Top Three
CAPE TOWN - This was definitely the start Zimbabwe were looking forward to.
The Zimbabwe Under-17 Schools rugby side finished Day One of the South African Grant Khomo festival as the third best following a 41-0 thrashing of Border Country Districs at Paarl Gymnasim, Cape Town.
Zimbabwe and sixth placed South Western Districts who beat Namibia 20-0 proved to be the sides with the best defence as they both did not concede.
Blue Bulls, Sharks, Golden Lions and Leopards go into day two of the competition in the top five.
Lameck Vheriwa, Patrick Chivanga, Zvikomborero Mudara and mudiwa Makanza all scored a try each while Tinashe Hombiro finished with 11 points (a try and three conversions0 while Tapiwanashe Maunze scored a brace.
However, there were no Zimbabweans in the top five points scorers, nor were there any in the top five try scorers as scoring was spread amongst the Zimbabwean attack.
With the rules of the competition stating that none of the players should be substituted on day one of the competition, Zimbabwe were forced to make a change in the 24th minute when Adrian Zivanai suffered an injury and had to be replaced by Takudzwa Mpariwa.
In direct contrast, the Zimbabwe Under-13’s 25-3 loss at the hands of Griquas at the same venue, relegated Gordon Pangeti’s side to 16th on the 18 team standings bettering only Border and Border Country Districts who both did not score against their respective opponents.
