Under-17 Extend Dominance Over Namibia
CAPE TOWN - Zimbabwe Under-17 schools rugby dominance over Namibia continued with a 15-5 win over their bitter rivals at Paarl Gymnasium on Friday morning in the Grant Khomo festival.
Last year Zimbabwe destroyed Namibia 21-7 and Friday’s win gave their second successive win over Namibia at this level of competition
Three unconverted tries gave the Zimbabwe Under-17 schools rugby side a happy ending to their campaign with a 15-5 defeat of bitter rival.
A brace from man-of-the-match flanker Milton Kachecha - a touchdown in each half of the game – supported by Wilbert Munda’s 58th minute try was all Zimbabwe needed and Namibia’s William Otto’s second half response was not enough.
With 12 minutes on the clock, Kachecha got the opener but Tabonga Ngonyamo – who missed all of Zimbabwe’s three conversions – failed to make use of the bonus point’s kick and 16 minutes on after failing to penetrate the Zimbabwe defence, Namibia made their only change.
Bryan Gordon was introduced for fullback Romano Green two minutes before the break and Namibia found their equaliser eight minutes into the second period through Otto but fly-half Diederik Niehaus missed the conversion.
That was the last time Namibia crossed the whitewash.
Twelve minutes before the end of the game Munda restored Zimbabwe’s lead with another five-pointer giving the tourists a 10-5 lead in the 58th minute.
With Zimbabwe having been involved in an unfortunate incident and were forced to make a change taking out Lameck Vheriwa for Tinashe Hombiro in the 59th minute and coach also Doug Trivella decided to introduce Leon Kadzere for Munda.
However, it was in the last minute of the game that Kachecha sealed his brace as Zimbabwe finished on a good note making it their second win out of three games.
But it was a different story for the Under-13 side who suffered their third defeat in the Craven Week Festival at the same venue falling 14-18 to Namibia Under-13.
Two convereted tries from Alex Whitfield and Tawanda Matipano were all in vain as Namibia scored two tries – one of the converted – and two penalties, for a close win.
At the end of the first half Zimbabwe were trailing 7-10 having equalized through a Whitfield converted Sikala try after Jurenzo Julius gave opened the scoring with a Divan La Cock converted touchdown while Andre Siepker’s penalty restored Namibia’s lead and take a 10-7 lead into the break.
Zimbabwe struck learly in the second half, Matipano converting Munyamana’s touch down as Gordon Pangeti’s boys went ahead 14-10 for the first time but they were denied a win after Patrick Haccou placed before Siepker last kick of the game gave Namibia the win.
In Kimberly, the Zimbabwe Under-18 schools rugby side lost their final game 5-10 to Eastern Province who had not yet won a game in the National Girl's Week Festival.
