Tough AFCON Draw Looms...Warriors Seeded In Lowest Pot
Zimbabwe has been seeded in the lowest of the four pots for the draw for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
The draw takes place on 19 October in host nation Gabon.
The Zimbabwe Senior men’s football team, the Warriors came out number 15 of the 16 qualified teams using the Confederation of African Football's seeding system, which used the performance of the qualified teams in the past three editions of the Nations Cup finals and qualifiers, plus the 2014 World Cup finals and qualifiers.
Only Guinea-Bissau were ranked lower than Zimbabwe.
Hosts Gabon are in Pot 1 with holders Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Algeria.
Pot 2 has Tunisia, Mali, Burkina Faso and DR Congo.
Cameroon, Senegal, Morocco and Egypt make up pot 3 while Pot 4 has Togo, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Guinea Bissau.
This gives Zimbabwe a worst-case scenario of being drawn with Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana or Algeria, along with Tunisia and Senegal.
The easiest-looking scenario might be the Warriors meeting Gabon, Burkina Faso and Egypt.
For the draw, host Gabon automatically goes to A1 and holders Cote d’Ivoire in C1. A draw will done for Ghana and Algeria for the positions of either B1 or D1.
The second stage will be drawing of teams in Pot 4. The first team drawn goes to A4, B4 for the second, C4 for the third and D4 for the fourth team.
The same procedure will be repeated for Pot 3 and Pot 2 until the groups are completed.
The final tournament will be held from 14 January to 5 February 2017 in the Gabonese cities of Libreville, Franceville, Oyem-Bitam and Port-Gentil.
Pot 1: Gabon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Algeria
