There Was No Need To Crucify The Referee - Chitembwe

VIOLENCE has no place in football and Caps United fans who threw missiles at Magals last Sunday are misguided elements, Makepekepe coach Lloyd Chitembwe has said.

This follows the abandonment of the Chibuku Super Cup last eight encounter between Shabanie and Makepekepe due to crowd trouble.

The match ended in the 67th after assistant referee Thomas Kusosa was struck by a missile and sustained a deep cut on the head in the chaos sparked by his decision to rule that an offside infringement had occurred in the build-up to the goal scored by Kudzai Nyamupfukudza in the 64th minute.

Shabanie were leading 1-0 thanks to a 44th minute header by William Mapfumo.

“We do not condone violence, it’s very, very bad for our football,” said Chitembwe.

“At the end of the day people come to enjoy their football and its very unfortunate for the referee. It’s really sad for people to behave the way they did.

“Mistakes do happen in football and there is no reason for us to crucify a person for that. Football is a game of mistakes, coaches do make mistakes and referees are no exception,” Chitembwe told SportsZone.

The Premier Soccer League are expected to decide on the match this week with Shabanie Mine likely to be awarded the game.
