Talent Alone Is not Enough: Chunga
Moses Chunga, rated as one of the best talents to emerge from Zimbabwe, reckons that the diminishing standards in the local premiership are as a result of the dearth in junior policy.
Chunga who is also famed for his philosophy which thrives on youthful players said that local clubs discarded the junior policy because they were impatient in building players from the grassroots.
“The problem is that clubs want quick results. They are not patient to develop players from young age until they are ripe to play at the top level,” said Chunga.
“Talent alone is not enough because players need to be taught the basics of football at an early age. You can’t teach old dog new tricks. We have been concentrating on win- win situation at the expense of development. We no longer have junior policy. It’s only very few clubs still with junior policy.
“There is need to mould players at a tender age on accuracy, composure, the width of the field and all the basics of football.”
There have been concerns over the depreciating standards especially on the potency of the strikers with the number of goals decreasing with each passing season. Golden boot winners in the past seasons have failed to reach the 20 goal mark.
Norman Maroto was the last striker to reach that mark in 2010 when he topped the scoring charts after scoring 21 goals during the 2010 season.
Last season’s golden boot winner Knox Mutizwa of Highlanders had 14 goals.
Gift Mbweti of Hwange leads the current standings with eight goals after 21 matches.
