Sundowns On The Verge Of Semis
Mamelodi Sundowns are on the cusp of booking their place in the 2016 CAF Champions League semifinals and will do so with a draw against Zamalek at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday evening.
Kick-off is at 7:30pm.
The Brazilians have made easy work of a difficult group ,so far, and head into the midweek clash three points clear of the White Knights in Group B; with two wins from two games.
Sundowns would have nine points to their name had ES Setif not been disqualified from the continental showpiece.
Pitso Mosimane's men entered the tournament via the back door - after AS Vita were booted out at the eleventh hour after they fielded an ineligible player int he preliminary round.
With the weight of expectation lifted, Sundowns have flourished and the Tshwane side are confident they can become only the second South African team to win Africa's premier cup competition.
Mosimane compared the emotions he is experiencing in build-up to the upcoming clash, similar to what he felt before their game against the University of Pretoria last season. Knowing victory over their rivals would clinch the Absa Premiership title, Sundowns romped to a 3-0 win.
“This game feels like the day before we played AmaTuks in the league. We knew that if we win‚ we wrap it up. It is the same," Mosimane said.
“The mentality was right [on that occasion]. We hope for an early goal because an early goal will help us play freely and easy‚ and unsettle the Egyptians.
“In my opinion‚ I don’t think that they [Zamalek] think they can go to Sundowns and win easily. Maybe before the tournament they thought they could come here and win.
"Things have changed now."
Spearheaded by the in-from Khama Billiat, who has reportedly attracted interest from both Zamalek and Al Ahly, Mosimane is in bullish mood.
Defeat for the five-time Caf Champions League winners will leave them on three points and subsequently hand Enyimba a glimmer of hope. The Nigerians are on zero points having tasted defeat in Atteridgeville (2-1) and Port Harcourt - going down 1-0 to the White Knights in the opening rounds of fixtures.
“They [Zamalek] know that they are skating on thin ice. It is not going to be very easy for them, comfortable for them to lose here because they have one more game to play after this. For them‚ a point will really eliminate Enyimba to be honest. I don’t see Enyimba beating them in Cairo," Mosimane continued.
"I think the coach of Enyimba will be disappointed in me, but I am saying it because I have checked the game here and there - I know anything is possible - but then Enyimba must double their efforts.
"I am also following Enyimba in the league and they are not free-flowing at the moment," the former Bafana Bafana head coach concluded.
'Downs will be without both Wayne Arendse and Tiyani Mabunda (both suspended), while Zamalek attacker Mohamed Ibrahim has been ruled out for the remainder of the competition after suffering a serious injury in Cairo a fortnight ago.
Ricardo Nascimento is set to be included on the Sundowns bench while Sibusiso Vilakazi will only be allowed to play for his new club in the Champions League next season. The midfielder featured for Bidvest Wits on the continent earlier this year.
The reverse fixture in the Egyptian capital ended in a 2-1 win for the Brazilians.
