Shabanie Mine Victory Marred By Violence
Shabanie Mine victory over Nitchrut at Peak Mine stadium in Shurugwi was marred by violence which left scores of people injured.
Shabanie Mine coach Tendai Chikuni was injured in the ensuing violence as he was hit by a missile on the hand and had to be heavily bandaged.
Violence started a minute before fulltime as Nitchrut supporters felt their team was losing the match. The unruly fans started pelting Shabanie supporters with missiles resulting in some players scaling the perimeter fence to seek refuge on the pitch. The situation was exacerbated by the few police details who failed to control the crowd.
Chikuni was livid calling on the Zimbabwe Football Association to improve security at lower division matches.
“Zifa must improve on security because such situations are dangerous. Our lives were put at risk here and the police failed to control these fans because they were outnumbered. This is a bad advertisement for football," said Chikuni.
Turning to the game, the Shabanie Mine coach was pleased with the victory, which he said was a laboured one.
" It’s a crucial victory for us because it was a tough match. It’s not easy to come out with a victory at Peak Mine stadium. The win also gives us confidence going foward as we want to consolidate our position at the top," he added.
The Chinda Boys opened a three point lead after second placed Blanket Mine were held to a 1-1 draw by Midlands State University on Saturday.
